What is TPI? The certification, the screen, and what it means for your golf
TPI certified appears in thousands of bios. What the Titleist Performance Institute teaches, how its levels and tracks work, and which one you need.
Few phrases appear in golf professional bios as often as TPI certified, and few are as rarely explained. The Titleist Performance Institute has trained tens of thousands of coaches, fitness professionals, and medical providers worldwide, and its screening framework has become the closest thing golf has to a common language for the body swing relationship. If you are deciding whether a TPI certified provider is what you need, or what kind, this is the plain explanation.
What TPI is
The Titleist Performance Institute is an education organization that studies how the body’s physical capabilities relate to the golf swing, and certifies professionals in its methods. Its core idea, which TPI calls the Body-Swing Connection, is that many swing characteristics are not purely technique choices but expressions of what a golfer’s body can and cannot do: a golfer who lacks hip rotation or trunk mobility will produce predictable swing patterns no matter how many lessons target the pattern itself.
That idea has research behind it in specific places. Limited lead hip internal rotation and reduced trunk mobility appear in studies of golfers with low back pain (Vad et al., American Journal of Sports Medicine, 2004; Tsai et al., JOSPT, 2010), and golf specific conditioning measurably changes both physical characteristics and swing mechanics (Lephart et al., Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, 2007). TPI’s screen is a structured way of looking for such findings; our articles on hip internal rotation, early extension, and casting walk through several of the connections in detail.
How the certification is structured
TPI’s program has three levels and five specialization tracks (Titleist Performance Institute, certification overview):
- Level 1 is the entry certification for all professionals. It covers the foundational Body-Swing Connection concepts and trains the TPI assessment screen: evaluating a player’s physical readiness and correlating results to swing characteristics.
- Level 2 deepens a chosen specialization through online coursework, in one of five tracks: Golf (teaching professionals), Medical (licensed healthcare providers), Fitness (strength and conditioning professionals), Power (speed and power development), and Junior (developing golfers).
- Level 3 is the advanced tier in each track, delivered as multi day in person seminars.
The practical implication for a golfer reading bios: TPI certified alone most often means Level 1. The track and level tell you the specialization, a TPI Medical Level 3 provider and a TPI Golf Level 2 teaching professional have both done real training, in substantially different things. Daniel Turner, DC holds TPI Medical Level 3 and TPI Golf Level 3, the advanced tier in both the clinical and coaching tracks, alongside his chiropractic licensure and SFMA Level 2 movement assessment training; how that combination shapes a Magnolia evaluation is described on our TPI framework page.
What a TPI screen involves, and its limits
A TPI style screen is a sequence of brief physical tests, performed in minutes with minimal equipment, sampling the rotations, hinges, balance, and separations the swing depends on: can the pelvis and torso rotate independently, do the hips internally rotate, can the golfer hinge and squat, can they balance on each leg. Results map to swing characteristics through TPI’s framework, generating hypotheses like: this golfer’s early extension is worth checking against their hip rotation and squat pattern.
The limits matter as much as the method, and TPI’s own framing is consistent with them. A screen identifies patterns worth examining; it is not a diagnosis. A failed test says where to look, not what is there, a hip that will not rotate might be muscularly tight, structurally shaped that way, or irritable, three findings with three different plans, distinguishable by clinical examination rather than by screening. This is precisely why the Medical track exists, and why at Magnolia the screen is the front door of an evaluation rather than the whole visit: the screen finds the thread, the clinical examination follows it, and the findings become a written plan. The screen alone does not establish a diagnosis or explain every swing characteristic.
Choosing the right TPI trained professional
A decision guide, by the question you are bringing:
- My swing has a stubborn characteristic and lessons alone have not moved it. A TPI trained teaching professional (Golf track) or a coach and clinician pair working from the same screen. The screen’s core value is telling the coach which faults are body limited.
- I want golf specific fitness or more speed. Fitness or Power track professionals, ideally working from screen results rather than a generic program.
- Something hurts, or a movement is limited, or I am returning from injury or surgery. A licensed healthcare provider with Medical track training, because the question has crossed from screening into clinical territory: diagnosis, treatment, and coordination with any existing care.
- A developing junior golfer. Junior track training addresses growth and long term athletic development alongside the screen.
The best case, and the reason TPI’s common language matters, is collaboration: a coach, a fitness professional, and a clinician reading the same findings and pulling one direction. That collaboration model is exactly how Magnolia works with golfers’ existing coaches, with findings shared with your permission.

Frequently asked questions
What does TPI certified mean?
It means the professional has completed training from the Titleist Performance Institute, at minimum the Level 1 certification covering the Body-Swing Connection and the TPI assessment screen. Beyond Level 1, TPI offers five specialization tracks, Golf, Medical, Fitness, Power, and Junior, each with Level 2 online coursework and Level 3 advanced in person seminars, so two TPI certified professionals can hold very different depths and types of training.
What is a TPI assessment or screen?
A structured series of physical tests evaluating the mobility, stability, and movement patterns the golf swing depends on, with results correlated to swing characteristics through TPI's Body-Swing Connection framework. It identifies physical patterns worth investigating; on its own it is a screen, not a medical diagnosis.
What is the difference between the TPI Medical track and the other tracks?
The Medical track is built for licensed healthcare providers and adds clinical evaluation and rehabilitation perspectives to the screening framework, while Golf serves teaching professionals, Fitness serves trainers, Power covers speed development, and Junior covers athletic development for young golfers. The credential to look for depends on the question you are bringing.
How much does TPI certification cost?
TPI does not publish a full public price list on its certification overview; costs vary by level and delivery format, with Level 1 and Level 2 online and Level 3 as in person seminars. Professionals considering certification should check current pricing directly with TPI at mytpi.com.
Does seeing a TPI certified provider mean better results?
No certification guarantees outcomes. What TPI training standardizes is a shared screening framework and vocabulary connecting body findings to swing characteristics, which makes collaboration between your coach, fitness professional, and clinician far more effective. The evidence based value comes from what the provider does with the findings.
