Return to golf

Connect your recovery to your return to golf.

Work with Daniel Turner, DC, to consider golf’s movement demands alongside the rehabilitation plan and guidance from your existing care team.

Start with your current care plan.

We discuss your procedure or injury, stage of recovery and golf goals before arranging an appropriate evaluation. After surgery, your surgeon's restrictions and clearance guide the process. Magnolia does not replace necessary postoperative rehabilitation; it adds the golf layer that surgical follow up does not usually include.

The research is on your side.

Golfers return from surgery at rates most patients find surprising. Pooled studies show 90 percent of hip replacement and roughly 70 percent of knee replacement patients return to golf, at an average of about four and a half months, with handicaps essentially unchanged; a prospective study of golfers averaging 72 years old found every one of them back to full rounds after knee replacement with no loss of swing speed. After spine procedures, surgeons most commonly recommend golf at 4 to 8 weeks following microdiscectomy and around 6 months following lumbar fusion. The details, timelines and staged return plans are in our guides to golf after joint replacement and golf after spine surgery.

Evaluate the movement relevant to your golf.

Depending on your recovery, the examination considers symptoms, movement, physical capacity and tolerance for appropriate activities, with particular attention to the segments that must cover for an operated area: after lumbar surgery, the hips and mid back; after a lead leg joint replacement, the rotation demands of the finish. Daniel explains the findings and recommendations in a written summary, with personalized exercises matched to your stage.

Coordinate with your team.

With your authorization, Daniel can communicate with your treating clinicians and instructor about relevant restrictions, progress and recommendations. Your surgeon owns the clearance, your therapist owns the rehabilitation, and the golf specific layer keeps everyone reading from the same page, which is the arrangement the successful returns in the literature have in common.

A staged return, not a date.

The pattern that works is consistent across procedures: capacity first, then putting and chipping, then half swings, then full swings and driver, then course play, with volume last and next day symptoms deciding each promotion. Return to golf decisions depend on your individual recovery, examination and treating team's guidance; progression is reviewed over time rather than promised for a fixed date.
